Morphine Tablets

Morphine tablets are prescription opioid pain medicines used to relieve moderate to severe pain when other pain treatments are not effective. They work by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, reducing the perception of pain. Morphine is commonly prescribed after surgery, for injury-related pain, or for chronic conditions such as cancer.

Morphine tablets are available in immediate-release and extended-release forms. Immediate-release tablets provide quick pain relief, while extended-release tablets offer long-lasting control for ongoing pain. Because morphine is a strong opioid, it should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare provider and exactly as prescribed.

Although effective, morphine carries risks such as drowsiness, constipation, nausea, dependence, and slowed breathing. Drinking alcohol or combining morphine with certain medications can increase the risk of serious side effects. Patients should never change their dose or stop taking morphine suddenly without consulting their healthcare provider.

How to use morphine tablets

Morphine tablets should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. If you are using extended-release morphine tablets, do not crush, chew, or break them, as this can release too much medicine at once and increase the risk of serious side effects. You may take morphine with or without food, although taking it with food may help reduce nausea.

Take morphine at the same times each day if it is prescribed for ongoing pain. Do not increase your dose, take it more often, or stop taking it suddenly without medical advice. Avoid drinking alcohol or using other sedatives unless approved by your healthcare provider, as these combinations can cause dangerous drowsiness or slowed breathing. Store the medication securely and keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
